BaddWorx Review in print
Communities are a wonderful thing. This country's many and varied groups of enthusiasts tend to form their own micro-communities, giving people the chance to socialise and share their passion, all the while introducing new people to their hobby, activity or sport.
The building and growth of any community might seem like an organic process to some, but they don't simply arise from thin air.
There is always a small group of selfless individuals willing to sacrifice their time and energy to make things happen.
They will be the ones organising events, seeking council approvals, starting Facebook groups and being present and available to make sure everyone gets the best from the experience.
One such person is BMX legend Tim White who, with the help of his buddy Haimona Ngata, has put together an epic, free event for kids to come and test their mettle on a rad BMX park in sunny Devonport.
Tim invited Submachine to come and check out what will hopefully be the first of many such gatherings, and these photos should serve to demonstrate what community-building looks like, and the epic, feel-good experience that these youngsters deserve.
Hoards of kids of all ages and abilities got the chance to bomb a variety of tracks, with Haimona calling out their moves and tricks over the PA. Judges kept score and each class division had its own prizegiving at the end. This meant that even first-timers got to experience the thrill of competition and the satisfaction of riding in a well organised event.
I'll admit to being taken aback watching children hurtle down one ramp at full speed and heading skyward off another, taking flight and deliberately letting go of their tiny bicycles, laughing in the face of their parents' medical insurance policies.
Perhaps the most heartening part of the day was the way the older riders lined the course and cheered on the young ones. With this simple gesture, and without realising it, they had cemented their place in a community.
